Practical Matters. NewNarrowPhone

Making the decision to begin a counselling relationship is a very personal process. You're likely to want to confirm that counselling is appropriate for you, and also to want to be sure you'll be comfortable with the counsellor you'll work with. Location, costs and the commitment required will probably all figure in your decision to go ahead too, and there may be other matters you need to consider. That's why I'm more than happy to talk with you on the phone or by e-mail before you decide to come for an appointment.

Working Practice

  • I work with adults and young adults (aged 14years - 18years) of all genders and all sexual orientations. I work one-to-one only (I do not work with couples, families or groups).
  • Day-time and early evening appointments are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
  • Within statutory limitations, counselling sessions are completely confidential.

    Preliminary Contact
You are welcome to make preliminary contact with me without obligation. You can phone (voicemail inbox), or send a text or e-mail. I aim to respond within two working days. Preliminary contact will allow us to explore whether a counselling relationship with me is right for you. There is no charge for this service.

  • Duration and Frequency of Sessions

  • Regular session take around 50 minutes, though first sessions will last 75 - 90 minutes to allow time for necessary administrative tasks.
  • Sessions usually take place weekly, although if circumstances require it (e.g. to fit with irregular work patterns) appointments can be more or less frequent than this.

    Number of sessions
  • Personal change goes at its own pace, so it's difficult to estimate how many counselling sessions an individual will need. Clients and I usually contract to have regular reviews to decide about continuing or ending. Many feel insufficiently ready to end in fewer than six sessions, but it's important that clients feel in control in the counselling relationship - the decision to end is always available to clients.

  • The Counselling Contract
This is the 'framework' within which therapy takes place, and comprises two distinguishable but inter-linked parts.

  • The 'Business' Contract: if we decide to work together, I'll ask you to sign an agreement that outlines the practical arrangements we both contract to adhere to (this would typically happen at the end of the first session).
  • The 'Therapeutic' Contract: this is the agreement reached between client and counsellor about how to work together. It can be (and usually is) re-negotiated as the client requires in response to his or her 'process.'

  • Cost
My normal charge for professional services is £40 per session. It's important to me that cost does not block access to counselling, so some low-cost sessions are available to unwaged or low waged clients. Please let me know at preliminary contact stage if you are low- or un-waged.

    Location and Access
Counselling sessions take place in a dedicated ground floor consulting room in a quiet and discrete residential property in south Ayr (see map). Clients are welcome to make use of the WC adjacent to the consulting room. The approach path to the premises has a gentle downward gradient, and there are two small steps at the front door. There is ample on-street car parking and good public transport links. I'm sorry, but it is not possible for anyone accompanying a client to wait on the premises. (search for timetables)
